Guide 1: How to Use a Fire Blanket

A fire blanket works by cutting off a fire's oxygen supply, smothering it either permanently or until more effective equipment can be used. If you need to use one:

  1. Alert others nearby and make sure someone calls emergency services.

  2. Check you have a clear escape route — never position yourself between the fire and the exit.

  3. Open the blanket and hold it in front of you as a shield.

  4. Lay it completely over the burning material, covering it fully with no gaps.

  5. Turn off the gas or fuel supply if it's safe to do so.

  6. Leave the blanket in place for at least 30 minutes to let everything cool.

Important: Fire blankets are single-use only. Once a blanket has been used, it must be disposed of — never reused.

Our fire blankets are manufactured to AS/NZS 3504 and available through our Products page.
