Most businesses do — and in practice it's often your insurance policy that drives it, rather than one law naming fire extinguishers for every business. Many insurers won't pay out on a fire-related claim if the right equipment isn't in place and serviced, so it's worth checking your policy conditions.
That said, there are real legal triggers too. Under the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015, every employer (PCBU) has a general duty to provide a safe workplace, which includes having adequate fire protection equipment on hand for an emergency. And if your business holds hazardous substances above certain quantities, the Health and Safety at Work (Hazardous Substances) Regulations 2017 specifically require you to have fire extinguishers on-site. You'll also have broader fire safety obligations under the Fire and Emergency New Zealand Regulations 2018 around things like evacuation procedures. We can assess your site and let you know exactly what applies to you.

Under NZS 4503:2005, extinguishers must be inspected and serviced at least every 12 months by a competent technician. Higher-risk environments require servicing every 6 months. We keep records for every site we service, so you've always got proof of compliance if you need it.

We'll let you know straight away what's needed — whether that's a refill, a pressure test, or a full replacement, before any work goes ahead.

It depends on the fire risks at your site. As a rough guide: dry powder suits most general environments, water is a simple option for paper and wood, CO2 suits electrical and equipment-heavy spaces, wet chemical is built for commercial kitchens, and foam suits sites with flammable liquids. See our Products page for the full breakdown, or get in touch and we'll recommend the right mix for you.
